His voice and reflective storytelling are not beyond similarity but despite his warm and earthy vocal tone, his brand of Americana also carries a more mainstream melodic sensibility. There are moments that also recall a mellower Steve Earle but you get the impression that the full band arrangements that accompany Simmons for most of the record have softened some of the edges.
